COT screener: who is at an extreme?

Every market on this site, checked after every CFTC release for hedgers and funds at a 3-year COT Index extreme (90 or higher, 10 or lower) and for the fastest 6-week shifts. A filter for where to look, not a buy or sell signal.

For information and education only – the screener gives no trade recommendations and no investment advice.

Shaded = 3-year extreme. Hedgers = Producers/Merchants (commodities) or Dealers (financial futures); funds = Managed Money or Leveraged Funds. Labels in financial futures carry less weight than in commodities. † Treasury, Bitcoin and Ether futures: the funds' reading is shown but not used (basis trade). WILLCO = 26-week index of commercial net position as a share of open interest (Legacy report). Source: CFTC, futures only.

How the screener works

COT Index. Where a group's net position (longs minus shorts) sits within its own range: 100 is the most net long of the past three years (156 weeks), 0 the most net short. It compares a market only with itself, so a small market and a large one can be read side by side.

Why hedgers and funds. In commodities, producers and merchants hedge physical business: they sell forward into rallies and cover after declines, so their position is usually largest near price extremes. Managed money tends to run with the trend and is most crowded when the trend is mature. That is why the screener reads hedgers with the market and funds against it. Financial futures work differently: Dealers are the banks on the sell side of client business, Leveraged Funds also run arbitrage trades, and the two are often on the same side of the market, with asset managers holding the other. In Treasury futures the Leveraged Funds' shorts largely reflect the basis trade (short futures, long bonds), so the screener does not use their reading there: in ZT, ZF, ZN, TN, ZB and UB only the dealers can trigger a label. Labels in the other financial futures carry less weight – see COT extremes explained.

Signals. Bullish setup: hedgers at 90+ and funds at 10 or below. Bearish setup: the mirror image. Mixed extremes: both groups at the same end of their range – the readings contradict each other, so no lean. Hedgers max long/short: only the hedgers are at an extreme. Funds crowded long/short: only the funds are – a contrarian warning rather than a trigger. Each market gets one label at most; the counts at the top overlap (a setup counts as a hedger and a fund extreme).

What it is not. Positioning can stay extreme for weeks or months while the trend continues. Traders use the screener to pick markets, then wait for price to confirm – a break of a recent swing, a moving-average turn – before acting. Educational only, not investment advice.
